“People were bringing little children to Jesus in order that He might touch them; and the disciples spoke sternly to them. 14But when Jesus saw this, He was indignant and said to them, ‘Let the little children come to me; do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of God belongs. 15Truly I tell you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as a little child will never enter it.’ 16And He took them up in His arms, laid His hands on them, and blessed them.” Mark 10:13 Ministry with children, youth, and their families has always been one of the most important ministries at St. Helen’s. This is evident in a number of ways. A stained glass window above the main Altar depicts the gospel passage quoted above and is dedicated to the memory of the Rev. Dr. Harry Trumpour, our founding Rector. Lena Kerr, a beloved member of our parish, received the Order of the Diocese of New Westminster in recognition of over fifty years she has dedicated to this ministry. Perhaps the most powerful testament to the wonderful way in which this ministry has borne fruit, is the unusually large number of people, now adults (some nearing retirement) who can proudly say that they were baptized and confirmed at St. Helen’s and are still regularly involved here. Here are the ways we minister to children and their families at St. Helen's:
Baptismal Preparation Serves those preparing for entry into the church through the Sacrament of Baptism. Lena Kerr, David Harrison, and Scott (our rector) are working to ensure that they are fully prepared spiritually and can make the promises of baptism with a whole heart. “Quiet Room” nursery This glassed-in room a the back of the church serves babies and their families, allowing parents to nurse and care for the very young while still being able to take part in worship themselves. Baby change tables are available in both the men’s and women’s washrooms. Pre-school (Catechesis of the Good Shepherd) Catechesis of the Good Shepherd preschool meeting each Sunday in our new home in the lounge. Each week the children will receive a new lesson and have time for discovering other work on their own, in the style of a Montessori environment. Work includes practising and revisiting previous lessons, art, flower arranging, plant care, reading and looking at books, prayer, and asking the teacher for a new lesson or a review. We include time to sing a song pray and read a few books together. Parent participation is welcome. Sunday School Led by Louisa Farrell, our staff Children's Ministry Coordinator, and a dedicated group of very capable volunteers, Sunday School serves children in Kindergarten through Grade 5. We are very excited to be launching the Godly Play program this year. St. Helen’s Youth Choir Our crack team of musicians, Peter Butterfield and Michael Molnar encourage all children of reading age and older to don the red robe and join the choir for the processional hymns, the Gloria, and occasionally other special music. It is not just top notch musical training. Peter’s and Michael incredible enthusiasm and humour make it hugely fun as well.
